The new terminal server znformica is running in the Windows domain
There are further terminal server clusters in Hamburg: winterm (for general usage) and winsaphr (for SAP users)

1. General Requirements

The terminal server system can be used by every DESY user on request. The access to the terminal server has to be authorized - please contact the User Consulting Office.

2. Connecting to the service

There are different possibilities to connect to the terminal server dependent on the operating system.
With Windows Server 2008R2 Microsoft introduced the "Network Level Authentication" (NLA) protocol. This feature should improve the security level. Unfortunately not all RDP clients support NLA protocol, especially rdesktop and older versions of the MS remote desktop client (mstsc).
The terminal server znformica accepts both kinds of clients, clients supporting NLA and clients without NLA support. The Hamburg clusters winterm and winsaphr (for SAP users) are configured for NLA only.

2.1 Linux

Two commands are available to connect to the terminal server, rdesktop and xfreerdp.

2.1.1 Using rdesktop

The most important switches/options are:

-a < bpp >

color depth, recommended -a 32

to enable compression

-g <geometry>

WxH or xx%, e.g. 1024x768 or 90%

-d <windows-domain>

-d win

-u <userID>

-d gut

-r disk:<sharename>=<Linux path>

the <sharename> is used on the Windows server for the <Linux path>,
\\tsclient\<sharename> and as disk in the “Computer” view.

-r sound:[local|off|remote]

rdesktop –a 32 –z –g 94% -r disk:usr1=/usr1 -r disk:tmp=/tmp –r sound:local –d win znformica
Please refer also the man pages: man rdesktop

We also provide the script winrdp for access to the terminal server znformica. The directories /tmp , /usr1 and the AFS home directory will be exported.

2.1.2 Using xfreerdp

The main options are like for rdesktop: -a, -z, -g, -d, … .
xfreerdp supports NLA and the user login name has to be given: -u <userID>.
For making local resources available on Windows the method differs.

This “virtual channel plugins” are used:

--plugin cliprdr

necessary for the clip board – cut & paste

--plugin rdpsnd

for sound (but may not work)

--plugin rdpdr --data disk:temp:/tmp --

disks and media

Important to know, each plugin should appear only once in the command line and all hyphens "--“ have to be placed right. Sorry, but the man pages are not so helpful, please ask your favored search engine for help.
xfreerdp -a 32 -g 94% -z -d win -u gut --plugin cliprdr --plugin rdpsnd --plugin rdpdr --data disk:temp:/tmp disk:remst:/media -- znformica

2.2 Windows 7

Click on Start menu and type in the field “Search programs and files” the following: mstsc /v znformica
Alternatively a Remote desktop connection can be opened via the Start menu -> All Programs -> Accessories and then 'Remote desktop Connection'.

2.3 Mac

The Mac App Store provides the “Microsoft Remote Desktop” for MAC users.
Make sure you are connected with the DESY network.

Start the app and then click on “New” to create a new remote desktop connection. Enter the following:

Close the window to save the remote desktop. Click on “Start” to connect to the selected remote desktop (or double-click on the remote desktop)

Please ignore it and click on the button “Continue”.

2.4 Tablets

The Google Play Store and iTunes provide Microsoft Remote Desktop Apps for Android tablets and iPads.

3. Several Recommendations and Hints

The roaming user profile will be created and configured through the very first time you logon to znformica. This may take a while.

User specific customizations

The installation of printers can be done in different ways.
The easiest way is to type in the Start menu window : \\adzprint
A list of all public printers appears and by clicking with the right mouse button on the printer you want you can connect to it. For more information about printing please read the webpage: Printing with Windows7.

Handling the Terminal Sessions
The znformica is configured to keep sessions available also in disconnected status. At any time one may logon again and will get the "old" session. But all users are kindly asked to logoff after the work is done. The recommended way is via Start menu and Log Off.

4. Applications on the Terminal server

Because on all TS clusters the DSM/NetInstall (NI) service provides most of the applications the very first time logging on it is recommended to stay patient until all applications are configured for the user (blue DSM/NI screens). After DSM/NI finished one should logoff and logon again. This procedure ensures that all applications are properly configured and initialized, especially the Kerberos and AFS service.

DSM/NetInstall applications on znformica:
Office 2010 including Viso, 7-zip, Inkscape, IrfanView, PDFcreator, putty, WinSCP, Ghostscript, GIMP, Acrobat reader, Kerberos for Windows, XStandard Lite and Open AFS.
More information about the DSM/NI-applications one may get on the IT Web page.
